Make Hay While The Sun Shines

This first hay cutting yielded 33 round bales, 5x5 feet weighing around 1100 pounds. This is enough to feed my horses and I already have a buyer for the rest...woohoo!

The Rose of Sharon are in beautiful bloom.

Earlier this month I wrote about cool mornings and a fire in the kitchen fireplace. Needless to say, the dogs enjoy the kitchen as much as I.

A beautiful ending to a perfect day.

Beautiful Days

Recently, another beautiful day in the valley after a rain.

This morning, neighbor moving bovines to new pasture.

They look like calves so it takes a few men to keep them in line and moving in a forward direction.

As they pass pasture with other cattle, some rush to see what's going on while others turn and run.

The calves will stop and munch the new grass along the fence line and the dog is near end of line to nip heels of any calves who try to turn around.

Just another beautifully perfect day on the farm.

1-5-16 Update

~ view of valley ~

As you may imagine, there has been a lot of interest in my farm. On two separate occasions, it was sold but, unfortunately, financing fell through and the contract closing date wasn't met. As of today's date, it's back on the market.

~ one upstairs bedroom ~

Also, as of today's date, the USDA is offering loans of 2.375% to 3.75% with no down payment.

PMI is now tax deductible, here; click here for other no, or low, down payment loan information.

~ upstairs office ~

A Youtube video, here, is delightful and made by Gina Martin, a former neighbor. The video is a trifle long but at any point you may opt out by clicking your delete button.

~ upstairs bedroom,
all upstairs bedrooms have 2 windows ~

~ downstairs bedroom across from half bath
could be used as office as it has entrance from
back porch and a window ~

The Farmhouse Kitchen

The stove is an original 1914 Acorn, refurbished into seven propane stove top burners and three electric ovens with a warming oven on the upper left side. David Erickson, near Boston, Mass., is the restorer and told me this stove was one of two in his known existence. At that time, the other was in a Colorado kitchen owned by Ralph Lauren.

The wood burning kitchen fireplace (propane stove removed) was re-built using slave made brick with a slab of wormy chestnut as mantle.

The birch kitchen cabinets, in an L shape with piano hinges, were hand crafted on site. A Welsh type cupboard takes up one wall (behind this end of table) with a 12 plate rack above the counter; some upper cabinets have glass fronts. A chef's pantry is on left side and a walk-in pantry with double sink behind the rocking chair.

Aerial View and House Floor Plans

 aerial view of the farm.

Driveway off Cove Road, a secondary county road, into the barn lot and, to the right, to the house (bottom center of photo). In a counter clockwise direction, starting with house at 6:00 - studio behind the house, small chicken/garden shed at the fence line between yard and small lot, barn, stables, corn crib. At upper right hand corner, in upper pasture, is a 60' round pen for working horses. At about 11:00 is the metal workshop with cement floor, separate office and half bath then granary (could be made into 2 bedroom farm cottage), antique livestock scales, yearly certified by VDACS. Nearer the house is a detached Mennonite made garage with loft and metal roof. There are 2 chutes for working cattle, one beside the scales building, the other behind workshop. All buildings have electricity or are accessible and metal workshop has heat in building, half bath and in office.

All fields on same side of road as house go with the farm and some fields not shown in photograph.

The first floor has two porches and both the front porch and back porch have metal roofs; the sun room has a deck.
One enters the house from the back porch into the mudroom. The kitchen (right), or up stairs (left) to the laundry room. Once in the kitchen, one may go into the pantry, the sun room or the family room. A ADA bathroom is off the sun room and shares the same beautiful view.

From the kitchen one enters the family room then into the dining room or the downstairs hall. On the opposide side of the hall there are two rooms used as a bedroom and parlor; under the stairs is a powder room and closet. The hall has doors leading to the front and back porches. The bedroom facing the back porch has a door and could be used as a home office.

One second floor access if from the mudroom leading to the laundry room then the upstairs bath (with original claw foot tub) or into a room that's been used as both bedroom and office. There are four rooms (bedrooms) off the upstairs hall, two on either side of the hall. The front stairs lead to the downstairs hall.

The house is approximately 5500 square feet and few changes have been made in order to keep the original footprint intact. The added rooms are the powder room, the sun room and the downstairs bath; all else is original.

Photo Montage via Video

Gina, a friend, made a beautiful video of my farm; click here to view. We know it's too long but it's too beautiful to shorten.

Enjoy!
